what was meant to be, never will be...

A high pitched scream pierced thought the silence of the night. It was as if time had stopped still and flashes of her past started playing in Evangeline’s mind. A soft groan escaped her soft lips and she knew immediately that it was fatal

It was a cool wintry night and Evangeline was ecstatic. Today was the auspicious day and she had been waiting for her wedding day! Her hands were cold and clammy as she felt the wind brush past her silk long hair. She could hardly contain her excitement and it was as if like a phoenix trapped in a cage, waiting to be released.

All her preparations for the dinner did not seem to been in vain. Many guests were already seated, waiting for her to arrive. The location, the date and the ambience were all set up nicely and Evangeline felt it was worth the effort. After all, it was her night this day and she felt as if nothing could put her down.

She got into the white bridal car, anxiously waiting for her groom to drive her to her destined location. She drummed her fingers as began humming to a tune she and her groom shared.

Time slowly crawled by and yet, there was no sign of him. Finally, Evangeline got impatient and stepped out of her car. Almost instantaneously, she felt a sharp pain at her neck. A stout man with a goatee and bloodshot eyes pressed a cleaver against her.

Out of the corner of her eye, she spied Johnny lying on the ground , apparently unconscious. Fear started to get a grip on her and she broke out in cold sweat. Grinning maliciously, the robber gestured at her jewellery with one finer and beckoned it to him. With hands trembling, she removed it and dropped it into her assailant’s outstretched hands. His eyes gleamed with all those jewels but he was still not satisfied. He grunted and demanded her wedding ring.

Though badly shocked, she shook her head furiously. Without warning, the robber gave a short chuckle and gave her a slap across her cheeks. She grimaced in pain but still, she shook her head

The robber gave a demented smile and raised the cleaver up high and proceeded with the move.

Before he could do that, a strong unknown force shoved him out of Evangeline’s face. It was Johnny! His eyes shone with hated and anger after the assailant gave a heft tumble. He turned his eyes on Evangeline to check if she was hurt.

By now, Evangeline was reduced to tears and there she squatted by the car, sobbing away. Smiling, Johnny consoled and reassured her that everything was alright. Evangeline looked back up at Johnny and gave a slight smile. Almost immediately, she spun Johnny around and he banged onto the car’s bonnet.

A high pitched scream pierced thought the silence of the night. It was as if time had stopped still and flashes of her past started playing in Evangeline’s mind. A soft groan escaped her soft lips as she knew her knife wound on her back was fatal. The cold sear of the pain caused her to collapse on the floor.

Recovering as fast as he could, Johnny shoved him roughly out of the way on to the cold hard granite floor. Johnny turned on Evangeline, checking on her gashing wound. Unwilling to give up, the assailant got back to his feet and threw the cleaver at the couple and sped off.

The hurtling cleaver’s course was aimed at Johnny’s back of his head and it seemed intent on hitting it. As Johnny’s back was facing it, he was oblivious to it. Evangeline gave a slight utter of despair and with her last ounce of strength, she pushed Johnny away and the cleaver found it’s new target’s mark. The impact of the cleaver on her chest sent her wedding ring out of her fingers into the drain. There it laid, lost and untouched.

Johnny struggled back to his feet to find Evangeline motionless, never to move again. What was meant to be an joyous occasion turned out to be a mere tragedy. It was an Evangeline’s selflessness that kept Johnny alive. It was all his fault. That thought revolved around his head as he started at Evangeline’s motionless body as blood continued gushing from the wound, embracing the cold hard granite floor
